“Once a year, go someplace that you’ve never been before.”

The Dalai Lama

In 1991, at age 63, I took my first trip to Europe. It was a three month trip to Italy, Greece and Switzerland. Because of that trip, I fell in love with foreign travel.

From 1994 to 2014 I averaged one foreign trip a year. During that time I took about 10,000 photographs. From those photographs I’ve selected 100 photos (they were among my favorites) to share in the following 20 categories.

Let’s begin our trip … this website is best viewed in Full Screen mode. ( click for info )

ABOUT ME

Hi … my name is Bob Hawley, I live in Sun Valley Idaho. In 1991 I had an experience that changed my life.

I was sixty three years old, a semi retired architect living on limited income. I was divorced, my two children had University Degrees and were on their own. I was faced with a question: How was I going to spend the rest of my life?

I wanted some adventure so I decided to take a three month trip to Europe . Traveling alone I visited … Italy … Greece … and … Switzerland. During those three months I had some of the most thrilling times of my life. As  a  result  of that trip I fell in love with low cost travel and photography. I continued  to  be semi-retired,  working  as  an  Architect  for about 4 or 5 months  a  year.  The  rest  of the time I was free to take a yearly foreign trip and also make exploratory trips throughout The United States, Canada and Mexico.

As a person approaches retirement they have an opportunity to make the last years of their life the best and most exciting years of their life. Travel opened me up to a whole new world, because of travel the years after age sixty-five were among the best years of my life.

I learned the wisdom of the following 3rd century quote by St Augustine:

“Life is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.”
